Expressway Reconstruction & Expansion Project with Warp-knitted Polyester Geogrid

Asphalt Pavement Anti-reflection Crack Engineering

Project Overview
This project refers to the reconstruction and expansion of a domestic expressway. An asphalt overlay is paved on the original cement concrete pavement. The joints of the old cement pavement are highly prone to generating upward reflection cracks, which seriously affect the flatness and service life of the new pavement.

Project Pain Points
The old cement pavement produces telescopic deformation under temperature changes and vehicle loads, easily causing cracking of the newly paved asphalt surface. Conventional fiberglass geogrids have insufficient toughness and are vulnerable to damage in heavy-load road sections, failing to achieve long-term anti-crack effects.

Selected Product
Bitumen-coated biaxial warp-knitted polyester geogrid with a tensile strength of 80kN/m.

Construction Scheme
Carry out leveling and cleaning treatment on the old pavement surface. Lay the polyester geogrid between the old pavement and the new asphalt overlay, and fix the grid firmly with fixing pins. Finally, pave the asphalt mixture and complete conventional pavement compaction and finishing.

Implementation Effect
The geogrid effectively absorbs temperature shrinkage stress and vehicle load stress, and significantly inhibits the upward propagation of pavement reflection cracks. Actual monitoring shows that the initial occurrence time of reflection cracks is extended from 3 years to more than 8 years. The overall service life of the expressway pavement is greatly improved, reducing frequent road maintenance costs.
